Greenpeace’s Guide to greener electronics

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Greenpeace has launched a guide to greener electronics, ranking the top manufacturers in the PCs, mobile phones, TVs and games consoles according to their policies on toxic chemicals and recycling. I am not too proud to see that my Acer notebook is on the mid-lower end of the scale and worst compared to the other notebook manufacturers regarding environmentally thoughtfulness :-( On the other hand my Sony PlayStation beats the other game consoles (Nintendo and Xbox) with great margins and Sony, together with Sony Ericsson, is raging on top of this ranking.

Unaddressed mail, no thanks!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

My family have now given a small contribution to a greener environment. I have cancelled my subscription to the local newspaper, Aftenposten, which save about ten kilograms of paper every week. In addition to being environmentally friendly, I realised I read all daily news on-line anyway.

I have also put a sticker on my post box saying ”Unaddressed mail, no thanks”. Every year about 45 kilograms of unaddressed mail is distributed to every household in Norway. This sums up to about 90.000 tons of paper every year. I hope that with this sticker I can save a small bit of forest, and if everyone else does the same we can save a lot.
